Microdermabrasion: What to Expect

With a mouthful of a name like microdermabrasion, you might find yourself wary to get started. Here's what microdermabrasion entails, and why it's right for you.

What is microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a process in which the top layer of your skin is gently buffed off, leading to a clean and fresh-looking glow.

What does microdermabrasion do?

It can help get rid of acne scars, even skin tone, reduce small wrinkles, hide sun damage and more.

How long does it take?

While the actual process of microdermabrasion doesn't take too long, the prep and cleaning might add some time; your beautician will have to clean your face before and after, along with moisturizing and applying sunscreen. Expect around an hour to an hour and a half total for the whole thing.

How much does it cost?

Here at Radhika's Beauty Spa, we price microdermabrasion depending on the amount of sessions you want. For more information, see our Services page.

How many sessions should I schedule?

That depends on what you want to get out of it. For a quick rejuvenation, one treatment, which includes 6 sessions, is recommended. However, if you're looking to get rid of facial scars or a more skin facial condition, several might be a better idea. Consult with your beautician for specifics.

Does microdermabrasion hurt?

Nope! Microdermabrasion only goes to the top layer of skin. People describe it to be like being licked by a cat. However, if your beautician is being a little rough for your liking, tell them. Your experience should not be uncomfortable.

When should I not get a microdermabrasion treatment?

Microdermabrasion can mildly irritate your skin, so avoid it if you have cold sores, acne, an open wound, a rash, sunburn, rosacea or a suspicious mole that hasn't been checked. If you have taken certain acne medications, consult with a doctor or beautician before microdermabrasion.

How should I prepare for microdermabrasion?

A few days before the treatment, avoid aspirin, don't wax the area you're going to have treated, stop exfoliating, and avoid sunburn. Try to go to your appointment with a clean face and no makeup.

What are the side effects?

There are no major side effects, other than minor irritation or redness if you have sensitive skin. Your face will normally be a little pink afterwards, but that should fade. Certain acne medications and toners might sting, so hold off on those for a day or two. Makeup and moisturizers are good to go; just make sure you're wearing sunscreen, since you'll be a little more susceptible to sunburn after your treatment?
